Plastic-Eating Bacteria

In a recent discovery, scientists have discovered bacteria that eat plastic. In this post, I'll give you a brief overview, so you'll look smart to your friends and keep up with the news.

The discovery of the bacteria was in 2016. A Japanese company took a sample of goop from the side of a recycling company in Osaka.

The bateria, (Ideonella sakaiensis) could only ingest one type of plastic called P.E.T. Now there's good and bad news. The good news is that P.E.T is a commonly used plastic bottles. The bad news is that they can't keep up with the growing 8.3 billion tons of plastic waste.

Although these bacteria seem amazing, there are some problems that stem from these.

  1. Theres a chance that these can harm the enviroment.

  2. Since these are lab-grown, we haven't seen their relationship with nature.

That's it for today! Sorry my posting schedule is so confusing. I've been super busy with school work. I am starting to go back to posts weekly.
